Qype: John Bright Memorial in Manchester

Manchester

One of the Albert Square statues, the John Bright monument commemorates the native of Rochdale, a Quaker, one of the members of the Anti-Corn Law League, and an opponent of the British foreign policy in the second half of the 19th century. A short walk from John Btight stands William Gladstone, in whose prime-ministry Bright had made his mark. He stood for Durham, Manchester, and Birmingham, and is buried in the grave-yard of the meeting house of the Religious Society of Friends in Rochdale.

The statue closely follows the existing portraits and engravings of Bright, and we see a venerable and pensive figure, with rather robust facial features. Unlike Gladstone who is all passion and movement, Bright is upright and solid – an image of confidence and stance.

Jubilee Fountain and Albert Memorial

The Jubilee Fountain,
Manchester

I took this photo on Friday morning, and it combines the two attractions of Albert Square in Manchester: Jubilee Fountain and the Albert Memorial. Those of you who visited London might have noticed already that Manchester’s is a replica of the Albert Memorial you can find in the Hyde Park, directly opposite the Royal Albert Hall in Kensington Gore. The northern memorial is nowhere near as magnificent, but it boasts its own little peculiarities, like coats of arms around the pedestal.

Accrington Market Hall

Market Hall, Accrington, Lancs

I am really glad that my dream – to travel for work – has come true this year. One of the places I went to in the last three months was Accrington – a small borough between Bolton and Blackburn. Although I didn’t have a chance to walk around much, I had just enough seconds to take the photo of this magnificent Market Hall. Standing in Peel Street (the street name doubtless commemorating Sir Robert Peel. the father-founder of the British police), this splendid Victorian building has recently been revamped to accommodate more traders and to make Accrington shopping a delight for citizens and visitors alike.
