Manchester’s Albert Square at Christmas

As a follow-up to the previous post, I decided to publish this photo of the festive Albert Square in Manchester, complete with the Town Hall, Santa Claus, the Albert Memorial, and even a poppy. Last year Santa went up really early: the picture was taken on November 5, 2008. I’m yet to visit Albert Square and its Christmas market, but I doubt the impression will be radically different from the one commemorated in this photo.

  1. You know Julie, we, and I use a “world wide” we, could not create the beautiful architecher we see here.. the artists and sculpturs are are long dead.. the incredable intricacies of the building.. absolutely incredible..

How would one go about trying to build something like it? Think of the enormous costs.. the unions.. the bickering the builders and the trades.. cost overruns.. blocking the view of the landscape..

I don't know what it is like your end of the pond, but in the US, they would fight about every detail for years, and it would never get built.. Sometimes I think the world should set aside England, as a historic landmark.. in fact I know there are several areas of your homeland that would fall right in with it.. Some of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in the world are in England and Russia.. The Classical workmanship.. not built to be rebuilt in twenty to thirty years, NO! built to last centuries.. Centuries.. think about it we don't make anything that is built to Last any more…….. Sad..

  2. Well, I don't know how reassuring this will sound, but in Manchester we see a lot of expansion that obviously comes at expense of the old buildings. I agree, though, that today's focus is very often on mobility and the opportunity to recycle, hence carton-board houses 🙂

  3. I just wish that the New, could be some how as artistic as the Old.. and just perhaps last longer than just a few years.. Ah, too melencoly perhaps…….
