A Novosibirsk Cinema Accused of Screening Sexually Explicit Films

These films have long been deemed classical, and their directors are counted among the geniuses of modern cinema – but nothing stopped the Novosibirsk authorities to close down a local film theatre that worked hard to enlighten the audience. The place called Cinema was shut down for screening “sexually explicit” films by Michelangelo Antonioni, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Peter Greenaway, and other directors who made their mark by exploring the dark and tabooed corners of human psyche and sexuality. The decision was supported by the indubious proof: “some of the films due to sexual perversion scenes were repeatedly banned in European and Asian countries“.

Any wonder people have long stopped visiting cinemas and started uploading “sexually explicit”, classical films to the Internet?

My Saturday Music: Gorky Park – Moscow Calling

My school teacher eventually brought a small TV in the class, and we’d occasionally catch a bit of TV during the day, but more often so in the morning, especially when we had a “nil lesson” that wasn’t listed in the official schedule, and for which we had to get to school by 7.30am. Half asleep and grumpy, we’d stare at the TV screen, waiting for other classmates to arrive, barely hearing anything. But I remember well this music video that opened to me the Russian rock and rock-n-roll as it was. Gorky Park band has achieved great success in the States in 1980s.
